# 24-hour care

24-hour care is home care in which a caregiver is awake and on duty at all times, usually through several caregivers working shifts. It gives uninterrupted support to people who cannot be left alone, including at night. It differs from live-in care, which uses one caregiver who sleeps in the home.

## Why it matters for your family

Families often need 24-hour care after a hospital stay, with advanced dementia, or when a person falls or wanders at night. Each caregiver works a set shift, so nobody has to stay awake for a full day. The tradeoff is cost and the number of people who enter the home. Hours add up fast, so families compare it with live-in care and assisted living. A common mistake is assuming insurance will pay. Medicare home health does not cover 24-hour care at home. Ask what each shift includes and how the provider fills a shift when a caregiver cannot come.
