# Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that slowly harms memory, thinking, and eventually the ability to do simple tasks. It is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. There is no cure. Some medicines may help manage symptoms or slow decline for some people.

## Why it matters for your family

Alzheimer's usually begins with memory trouble and grows over years. Later stages bring needs for help with bathing, dressing, eating, and safety. Families often start by watching for changes and seeing a doctor for a full evaluation. The right diagnosis matters because other conditions can look similar. A common mistake is treating early signs as normal aging. Plan early for care, legal papers, and support. Home care, adult day programs, and respite can ease the load as needs grow. The Alzheimer's Association offers a free 24/7 helpline at 800-272-3900. Keep a short written record of changes, since dates and examples help the doctor.
