# Assisted living

Assisted living is a residential setting for people who need help with daily tasks but not the full medical care of a nursing home. Residents usually have their own room or apartment. Services often include meals, personal care, medication help, and supervision. Medicare does not pay for assisted living.

## Why it matters for your family

Assisted living gives older adults support while keeping some independence. It can fit someone who is no longer safe alone but does not need round-the-clock nursing. Most residents pay privately. The National Institute on Aging says Medicare does not pay for it, and costs and rules vary by state. A common mistake is assuming it will always cover higher needs. Some communities ask residents to move if care needs grow. Ask what level of help is included, what costs extra, and when a resident must leave. Many families compare it with care at home before choosing.
