# Bathing

Bathing, as an activity of daily living, means washing the body by sponge bath, tub, or shower, and getting in and out safely. Many older adults need help with it first. Caregivers can help with setup, steadiness, washing, and drying while protecting privacy.

## Why it matters for your family

Bathroom floors are wet and hard, so bathing is a common place for falls. Many people hide the need for help because it feels private. Signs include body odor, fear of the shower, or avoiding baths. A caregiver can help with safe transfers, a shower chair, and a handheld shower. For people with dementia, a calm approach and a steady time of day, often morning, helps. A common mistake is pushing too hard. Offer choices and keep the person covered. Under Medicare, bathing help alone is generally not covered when it is the only care needed.
