# Certified nursing assistant (CNA)

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) is a trained worker who gives basic care, such as bathing, dressing, toileting, moving patients, and taking vital signs, under the supervision of a nurse. CNAs usually finish a state-approved program and pass a state competency exam. Title and rules vary by state.

## Why it matters for your family

CNAs work in nursing homes, hospitals, and homes. They are a common choice for hands-on personal care. Many families ask for a CNA because the credential shows set training and a state exam. A CNA is not a nurse and does not make nursing judgments. In nursing homes, CNAs must be listed on the state registry. A common mistake is assuming CNA training is required for every home caregiver. It is not. Rules vary by state and setting. Ask for proof of certification and check it on the state registry. A CNA's role at home depends on state rules and the employer.
