# Direct care worker

A direct care worker is a paid worker who gives hands-on help to people who need support with daily living. The term covers home health aides, personal care aides, and nursing assistants. They help with bathing, dressing, eating, and moving. They work in private homes and in care facilities.

## Why it matters for your family

The title tells you the type of job, not the exact tasks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that home health aides may do some basic health tasks depending on state rules, while personal care aides generally give nonmedical help such as companionship, cleaning, cooking, and driving. Families should ask what a worker may and may not do in their state. A common mistake is to expect a personal care aide to give injections or manage medicines. Those tasks belong to licensed clinicians or to people trained under state rules. Direct care workers are central to care at home.
