# Family communication

Family communication is how relatives share updates, decisions and concerns about a loved one's care. It includes regular check-ins, shared notes and clear roles. Good communication reduces conflict and keeps caregivers informed. It covers both routine updates and hard talks about changing needs, money and who does what. Clear roles keep everyone informed and reduce conflict.

## Why it matters for your family

Care at home affects the whole family, and disagreement is common. One child may live nearby and see daily needs, while another lives far away and sees only a call. The National Institute on Aging offers caregiver worksheets to help coordinate care and track responsibilities. Set a regular time for updates, such as a weekly call. Choose one person to speak with the care provider. Share the care log and daily notes. A common mistake is to say nothing until a crisis. Another is to leave the older person out. Ask what they want. A family meeting with a neutral guide, such as a care manager, can help.
