# Frontotemporal dementia

Frontotemporal dementia is a group of brain disorders in which abnormal tau or TDP-43 proteins build up in the frontal and temporal lobes. It often changes behavior, personality, or language before memory. It can begin at a younger age than Alzheimer's disease, and it worsens over time.

## Why it matters for your family

Families may first see changes in behavior rather than memory. A person may act impulsively, lose empathy, or have trouble finding words. Because these changes can look like depression or a midlife crisis, diagnosis can take time. A specialist can help. A common mistake is taking the changes personally. They come from the disease. Caregivers do best with steady routines, simple choices, and calm responses. Safety, driving, and money need early attention. Support groups can help families. Home care can add trained help as needs grow. An elder law attorney can help the family set up legal papers while the person can still take part.
