# Long-term care ombudsman

A long-term care ombudsman is an advocate who works to resolve problems about the health, safety, welfare and rights of people in long-term care facilities. Facilities include nursing homes, board and care homes and assisted living. Each state runs a program under the Older Americans Act.

## Why it matters for your family

The ACL describes state ombudsman programs as serving residents of long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, board and care and assisted living. They also push for policy changes. A family caring for someone at home may not use this program. It is for facility residents. If a loved one moves to a facility after home care, the ombudsman can help with complaints about care or rights. A common mistake is to call the ombudsman about a private caregiver at home. For home concerns, contact Adult Protective Services or the care provider. Look up your state's ombudsman through the Eldercare Locator or your Area Agency on Aging.
