# Shift

A shift is a set block of time when a caregiver works with a client. A shift can be a few hours, a full day or overnight. Care that runs around the clock is usually split into shifts among several caregivers. Start and end times should be clear.

## Why it matters for your family

Shift length affects both quality and cost. Short visits suit help with meals or errands. Long shifts suit continuous support. HomeCare.com says families choose the number of visits and the hours per visit, with no minimums and no contracts. Its 24-hour care is delivered in rotating shifts by multiple caregivers. A common mistake is to assume a live-in caregiver works a single endless shift. One caregiver needs breaks and rest. Families should ask what the caregiver does during the shift and what happens at handoff. HomeCare.com says its app confirms the caregiver is at the home on time and that billed hours are accurate.
