# Sundowning

Sundowning is increased confusion, anxiety, or agitation that some people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia feel from late afternoon through night. It can bring pacing, suspicion, or trouble sleeping. Doctors do not fully know why it happens. Routines and a calm setting can help.

## Why it matters for your family

Sundowning can strain families because it often starts when everyone is tired. A person may become restless, ask to go home, or refuse bedtime. Steps that may help include a steady daily routine, daylight and activity in the morning, a lighter evening meal, less caffeine, and a calm, well-lit evening. Avoid arguing. A common mistake is assuming the behavior is deliberate. Discuss sleep problems with a doctor, since infections and other conditions can make confusion worse. Evening or overnight caregivers can give family members rest. The Alzheimer's Association helpline is 800-272-3900.
