# Wandering

Wandering is when a person with dementia leaves a safe place or walks around without a clear purpose and may become lost. It can happen at any stage. It can be dangerous, especially at night, in bad weather or near roads and water.

## Why it matters for your family

Many people with dementia wander. The Alzheimer's Association says tips can reduce the risk but cannot guarantee a person will not wander. Useful steps include meaningful daily activity, meeting basic needs such as toileting and food, door alarms or monitors, and a plan for what to do if the person goes missing. The Alzheimer's Association advises calling 911 if the person is not found within 15 minutes and telling the police that the person has dementia. A common mistake is locking a person in alone, which is unsafe. Supervision matters. Advanced companion care from HomeCare.com includes fall-risk and wandering safety support.
