How to estimate your monthly cost
- Pick the hours. Write down the help your parent needs each day and when. How many hours of care does my parent need?
- Find the local rate. Use the hourly median for your city in the table above.
- Do the math. Hourly rate x hours per week x 52 / 12 = monthly estimate.
- Check who can help pay. Look at VA benefits, long-term care insurance and your state's Medicaid programs on its state page.

Common questions
How much does home care cost per hour?
The U.S. median for a non-medical caregiver is $35 an hour in CareScout's 2025 Cost of Care Survey. In HomeCare.com's locations the local median ranges from $25 to $45. Rates vary with the area, the hours and the level of help needed.
How much does home care cost per month?
Multiply the hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by 52 weeks, then divide by 12. At $35 an hour, 20 hours a week is about $3,033 a month and 44 hours a week is about $6,673 a month. These are estimates, not quotes.
Is home care cheaper than assisted living?
It depends on the hours. The U.S. median for assisted living is $6,200 a month. Home care at the median hourly rate passes that figure at about 41 hours a week. For a few hours a day, home care usually costs less. For round-the-clock help, it usually costs more.
Does Medicare pay for home care?
Medicare does not pay for ongoing non-medical home care, such as help with bathing, meals or companionship, when that is the only care you need. It can cover part-time skilled home health care ordered by a doctor for people who are homebound. Medicaid programs, VA benefits and long-term care insurance may help with non-medical care for people who qualify.
