Electronic visit verification (EVV)
Electronic visit verification (EVV) is a system that records home care visits electronically. For Medicaid personal care and home health visits, federal law requires it to confirm the service type, who received it, who gave it, the date, the location, and when it began and ended.
Why it matters for your family
EVV helps confirm that a paid visit took place. Federal law (the 21st Century Cures Act) requires states to use it for Medicaid-funded personal care and home health visits at home. Caregivers often check in and out with a phone or app. Families gain a record of arrival and departure times, and billing can match hours worked. The federal rules do not require GPS. Systems differ by state. A common mistake is thinking EVV applies only to Medicaid clients. Some private providers use it too. HomeCare.com's mobile app confirms the caregiver is at the house on time and that billed hours are accurate.
