Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Control Information System (FACIS)

The Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Control Information System (FACIS) is a commercial database search that compiles federal and state lists of health care workers and companies that were excluded, sanctioned, or disciplined. Employers use it to screen licensed health professionals, such as nurses, before hiring.

Why it matters for your family

FACIS helps an employer check whether a licensed professional has been barred from federal health programs or disciplined. The federal exclusion list comes from the HHS Office of Inspector General, which says employers can face penalties for hiring an excluded person. FACIS is a screening tool, not a full background check. It does not replace criminal record checks or license verification. A common mistake is assuming it applies to every caregiver. It is mostly used for medical professionals. HomeCare.com includes a FACIS search for trained medical professionals, such as registered nurses, as part of its screening.
